about SUSAN
I am an artist working with print, paper, stitch and cloth.
My practice is influenced by the things I see, their shape and potential for abstraction. I always spend time researching my subject which creates a fresh way of proceeding to the making stage and influences my choice of materials, colours and stitch.
My current projects concern “Physical Barriers“ their ability to “Keep in and Keep out” often with disastrous consequences to both the eco systems and humans. Barbed wire for instance is and was used as a means of oppression and control.
I have developed a love for both two and three-dimensional work, a passion for printing on both cloth and paper, layered and combined in a single collaged piece. Text and Asemic writing are often included to add interest and define my message. Stitch is the final addition of texture or colour. I like to use traditional hand stitch in rebellious and different ways.
I use a combination of techniques to suit the subject matter. Dyeing with natural and Procion dyes, mono printing, collagraph and screen printing, paper lamination and wax. Whenever possible I use recycled paper; I also re-purpose cloth for dyeing and printing.
