about julie
My work is about the celebration of colour and form in landscape. It is an emotional response to the nature's awe-inspiring scenes which I find intriguing. Captivating views, often of the countryside or the coast, offer the opportunity to stop and gaze, to become lost in the beauty of the land, providing a brief escape from the preoccupations of life.
My photographs become the starting point for the work followed by sketchbook trials to explore the subject matter, colours and textures. Using a variety of media including paper, paint, fabric and thread which I layer and distress, I create my impressions of the scenes I love, combining machine and hand stitching to build up the surface texture.

Regular walks along the seashore have been the starting point for this body of work. A fascination with the sea, its power and the ever-changing colours have brought about feelings of peacefulness and calm even on stormy days.
The rhythm of the tides and waves are echoed in peoples' footsteps which leave their temporary marks on the sand. Tidal changes remove, rearrange and erode all in their path.
Colouring media with hand and machine stitch has been used to portray the colours and constancy of movement from shore to horizon.
