about Hilary
I have always been interested in ancient images and the stories they tell, and for the past few years have been looking at past migrations mainly of the ancient world. The objects that they carried with them whether of practical or emotional value do not change much.
Documents relating to family or religion would have been kept safe and hidden.
Spindle whorls and loom weights were carried as textiles would need to be woven for people and animals on the journey.
Keys were often kept although most migrants knew they would never go home so there is a great symbolism in keys.
I try to interpret these themes building up layers of silk organza , noil and papers which have been printed, painted and stitched to give an impression and only showing parts of the image
I sometimes use ancient languages and words can be reversed , broken up and concealed. They can be seen as text but not legible.
